RIP Gordon Low

We are saddened to hear of the passing of our former player Gordon Low, at the age of 83.

Gordon was born in Aberdeen and moved to Huddersfield after being spotted by Archie Beattie, the brother of former County manager Andy Beattie, who was the Town manager. He went to Leeds Road with his good friend and fellow Aberdonian Denis Law. Law was best man at Low’s wedding in 1960. In total he made 67 appearances for The Terriers

After four years he moved down south to join Bristol City where he remained until 1968, making 205 appearances for The Robins.

He signed as a centre half for County in June 1968 for a fee of £4,500. Alongside Mike Milner he had the unenviable task of replacing the championship winning pairing of Matt Woods and Eddie Suart. He became an almost ever present in his first season, during which he scored from the penalty spot on his debut v Reading. He went on to score nine goals in a season that promised so much. Despite the sale of star centre forward Jim Fryatt, County were in 2nd position in early January, but tailed away badly to finish a disappointing 9th in the 3rd Division table.

The following season was disastrous for County, who were relegated back to the 4th Division. Gordon was a regular for the first three months of the season, but was then replaced by Jim Smith. He did return to the team later in the season but by this stage, County were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

In total he made 73 appearances for County scoring 9 goals and was a particularly effective penalty taker.  He also had his own song, sung on the terraces by the County faithful:

“A song of love is a sad song, hi Lili, hi Lili, Gordon Low!”

After leaving Edgeley Park he moved to Crewe Alexandra before finishing his career with Selby Town.

Gordon is remembered at Edgeley Park as a skillful but tough tackling centre half, who had he been blessed with more pace, might well have joined his friend Denis Law at the highest level.

We send our condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this very sad time.
