Rydel signs three year deal

The club is delighted to announce that defender Ryan Rydel has signed a new three year deal at Edgeley Park, extending his stay until 2027.

Ryan has been at Edgeley Park since joining from Fleetwood Town in April 2021 and has since gone on to make 83 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring six times from left-wing-back.

He’s been known as the assist king for most of his time at the club, setting up a remarkable 25 goals for his teammates across two seasons in the National League and in League Two.

The 23-year-old had his season cruelly cut short back in September after suffering an ACL injury in training, but is set to return to first-team action in pre-season and has now committed his long-term future to the club.

First-Team Manager, Dave Challinor said:

“Ryan obviously had a disappointing season due to the ACL injury he picked up in September, and needs to use that as motivation for a new challenge in League One. The club is looking to protect potential and assets, and we’ve all seen this in Ryan over the period he’s been at the club.

“Next season becomes a big one for him, especially on the back of the last nine months. He faces a battle to get in the team and get back to the levels he showed prior to his injury. He also, at 23, now needs to mature and establish himself into a consistent, reliable League One player, which we all feel he has shown that he can do if he focusses on what he needs to do day-to-day to improve and progress.

“The contract extension gives him the time to do that now it has been agreed and signed, and we are all looking forward to continuing to work with him.”

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:

“Ryan’s ACL injury was of course one of the major disappointments from last season, both for him personally and of course for the team. It is well know he is a high impact player, who makes assists and scores goals.

“But I think what comes back is potentially better.

“While it’s never a nice experience, those hours in the treatment room, bike and gym make you return mentally and physically stronger and we are already taking about a player with high athletic capabilities.

“We are excited to see how he comes back. After an injury of this magnitude, it may take a while but this deal recognises that, and shows our faith for Ryan to make an impact to our team in this next chapter.”
