Defender Ryan Johnson joined Stockport County in January 2022 from League Two Port Vale, signing for an undisclosed fee. His move to Edgeley Park saw him become Dave Challinor’s first signing as County manager.
The 25-year-old spent six months at Vale Park, following a successful 2020/21 season that saw him help Challinor’s Hartlepool United side win promotion to the Football League via the play-offs.
A left-sided centre-back that is comfortable on the ball, Johnson played a key role in that promotion, making 37 appearances and scoring five times – playing every minute of Hartlepool’s three play-off games.
Birmingham-born Johnson began his career in West Brom’s youth academy before leaving to join Stevenage, then of League One, in search of a faster route into first-team football. He got exactly that in May 2014, as he became the Club’s youngest debutant in the Football League at the time after starting away at Brentford at the age of 17 years and 215 days.
Having enjoyed several successful spells out on loan, he eventually joined National League North Kidderminster Harriers for an undisclosed fee, making 66 appearances for the club before moving on to Hartlepool in September 2020.
Ryan made his debut for the Club as a substitute in our 4-1 win away at Altrincham in January 2022, before scoring his first goal just four days later in a 3-0 FA Trophy win against Larkhall Athletic.
