Mental Health Carers Group Stockport (MHCGS), who were offered the opportunity by Stockport County and the Community Foundation to carry out the Match Day Collection at the recent home game against Salford City FC, raised a fabulous £408.25!
MHCGS was started in 2012 by carers, for carers of adults of working age who have a serious, long-term mental illness such as Psychosis, Personality Disorder, and Bi-Polar. As well as 1:1 support, the group facilitates monthly meetings aiming to help each other with emotional support, information sharing and guidance through the labyrinth of local mental health service provision.

“We would like to say a big thank you to Stockport County, the Community Foundation and all of the fans from both teams at the game who dug deep and gave generously for a very worthy cause. This much needed funding will make a massive difference in offering on-going support to our carers and their families. A big thank you to all 18 volunteers, who gave their time and effort on the day to not only raise funds for the group, but to help raise awareness about the work we do in our local community, and help to break down barriers to serious mental illness”.
Dave Wardle, Community Foundation Manager responded by saying:
“It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to support this local carers group who do such an important job in helping people and families with long-term serious mental health conditions. I hope the funds help assist the work that they do in finding and campaigning for better treatments, challenging attitudes, improving education and research into serious mental illness”.
