Stockport Mind is your local independent mental health charity, who strive to work towards a community where people experiencing mental distress and their families and carers are supported in their recovery free from stigma and discrimination, and are empowered to reach their full potential.
Set up in 1971 by a group of volunteers, Stockport Mind is affiliated to National Mind, one of the leading mental health charities in the UK, and is now run by a mix of trustees, volunteers and paid staff, some of whom have themselves experienced mental distress. They offer an inclusive and welcoming service, believe in a social rather than medical model where they focus on the person rather than a diagnosis, and believe in the principle of recovery. They aim to do this by delivering high quality services, raising awareness of mental wellbeing, working within a recovery framework, and involving people with experience of mental distress in every aspect of their work.
With 1 in 4 people in the UK estimated to experience a mental health problem in each year, and the rate of suicide recently reported to be rising, most greatly amongst men, Stockport Minds work is lifesaving. They campaign for a society where feeling depressed or anxious or experiencing any other mental distress is no longer taboo and where people feel they can speak up and access the support that they need. They aim to be friendly and accessible and so provide a range of ‘drop-in’ social groups each week which are open to anyone to attend, as well as an art group and a group called Connect which is focused on improving both physical and mental health through a selection of activities including walking, day trips, meals to name a few. Stockport Mind also support carers and those coming out of secondary care, get in touch or check out the website for more information.
Stockport Mind is on most social media and promote a range of campaigns along with information on how to get more involved to support your local mental health charity, from becoming a member of Stockport Mind, a one-off donation or fundraising, information is available so get in touch.
