The Nine In A Row | County 1-0 Mansfield Town

Game number six of our EFL record nine wins in a row without conceding a goal saw the visit of Mansfield Town to Edgeley Park, in what proved to be a thrilling game.

After five straight wins had catapulted County up the table, and slowly moved the Football League record into sight – but they were indebted early on to goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who showed superb reactions to palm away a powerful close-range effort from Martin Gritton.

Buoyed by that early reprieve, County took the lead after just 17 minutes – Anthony Elding smashing the ball home from a corner for his fourth goal in his last six games.

County then had a glorious chance to double the lead as Anthony Pilkington was brought down inside the area for a penalty, but Adam Proudlock was denied from 12 yards by Jason White.

County were almost made to regret that miss immediately but for the heroics of Man of the Match Hennessey, who saved superbly with his feet from a 1-on-1 with Matt Hamshaw.

Both teams struck the woodwork in an electric second-half, but ultimately Wayne Hennessey and County kept the visitors at bay to hold on for a big, and ultimately deserved victory, to the delight of a rapturous Edgeley Park.
