County went in to game eight of the run with a chance to equal the EFL record of successive wins without conceding – but standing between them and history was League Leaders and eventual Champions, Walsall.
Despite leading the way at the top of League 2, Richard Money’s men came into the game on the back of two successive defeats, whilst County were currently the form team across all four divisions of the Football League – and the Hatters smelt blood.
In front of a vocal 6,000+ crowd under the floodlights at Edgeley Park, County went about taking the game to the champions-elect, Michael Rose coming closest in the first-half with a free-kick deflected just over the bar.
The Saddlers looked a threat on the counter-attack, but Hennessey remained relatively untroubled in the County goal, largely due to the immense defensive work of Rob Clare, Gareth Owen, Ahsley Williams and Rose in front of him.
Into the second-half and County finally found the breakthrough, Anthony Elding getting on the end of Tes Bramble’s delightful ball in to side-foot the Hatters in front, to the delight of a rapturous Cheadle End.
Far from sitting back on their lead, County, backed by that crowd, continued to push for another goal, Adam Griffin almost grabbing it after getting on the end of another delightful ball in from Bramble, but hitting it just wide of the post.
It wasn’t to matter though, as County comfortably held on for a third successive 1-0 victory, an eight win in a row without conceding and moved just one game away from a place in the record books.
