A Message from Lucy Connell

Head of Education for our Football Education Lucy Connell has provided an update on our Level 2, Player Pathway and Sports Career Pathway students, as the term comes to a close:

“Dear Parents/Carers and Families,

Wow! What a term we have had! Doesn’t September seem like a long time ago?!

It has been all go here at SSV and our students have started really brightly for 23-24.

Our Level 2 students have settled in really well and have been busy getting stuck into Unit 1 (Physical and Sports Education in School and Community settings) and Unit 2 (Working in Sport and Active Leisure) of their Qualification: Level 2 Diploma in Sport Industry Skills– Leading children’s Activities. They have been learning about job roles, professionalism in these industries and appropriate legislations & policies relevant to the Sport & Active Leisure industry. Alongside their studies, the students have applied themselves excellently in their training & games as well as other volunteering opportunities and gaining additional qualifications.

The First Year Level 3 students (both; Players & Sports Career Pathway) have also made an excellent start to this academic year. They have adjusted brilliantly to FE & College Life and have immersed themselves into their education. The first term has consisted of Unit A (Careers in Sport), B (Health & Wellbeing) & C1 (Developing Coaching Skills). The learners have undertaken an analysis of a client’s health, taken part in an Interview and created a training booklet outlining the roles and responsibilities of a coach to name just a few. Alongside this, learners were involved in a “careers week” where guest speakers from a variety of industries & opportunities came to discuss options after they finish with us here. Some students have also been involved in volunteering for the Community Trust at SCFC and did an amazing job.

The Second Year Level 3 Students have returned to education with a renewed energy. They have got stuck into their Research Project Unit – where they have produced a unique research question, a hypothesis, literature review, methodology and data collection. After the Christmas break, they will be analysing the data & generating a conclusion. The students have also completed Unit 3: Sport Psychology. Here, they have learnt about the theories of personality, motivation, stress, anxiety and arousal and their impact on sports performance.

This term has also seen a record percentage (50%) of students apply to University, with most receiving offers to their first choice & back-up choice. We are really proud to be able to support our learners and they have a done a great job meeting our internal deadlines to ensure the best possible outcomes. Akin to this we have 6 students who have been offered football scholarships in the USA, 3 of whom are attending the same University (Mineral Area College, Missouri).

All students have had the opportunity to acquire additional qualifications including Introduction to Futsal, Safeguarding awareness & Disability in sport – these can all be used to enrich their CV’s. We have also introduced all our students to ‘Routes CV’. This is an app that CVs can be built on – which can incorporate Unit Grades, Match Minutes, VEO Videos, images, Personal Profiles. This is a cutting-edge app, that can be sent off to prospective employers/ football managers (depending on individual student’s needs), an extremely valuable tool for destinations.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break & we look forward to welcoming the student’s back on the Monday 8th January 2024, where the hard work continues.

A date for your diary: Monday 15th or Tuesday 16th January at Edgeley Park. Parents evening. More Info to follow.

Thank you all for your continued support,

Lucy Connell”
