Academy work experience

Work experience the Academy undertook in February

In February, the Community Trust welcomed 208 girls to take part in the 2022 Stockport County Community U11’s Premier League Primary Stars Cup at Stockport Sports Village. Many of our Academy students, officiated throughout the day as part of their educational studies.

Academy student Reuban Kirkham who took part had this to say:

“We were all given the responsibility to lead the girl’s tournament and it was almost completely self-run by us lads at the Academy. Obviously set up was supervised by those at the foundation, but it was still a great experience which mirrored what some of us may be doing in the future. It was a great chance to practice and develop our skills in the community sector; refereeing games, setting up pitches and ensuring that everything run smoothly for the enjoyment of the teams involved. Hopefully those who participated had a good time, even if the weather was bitterly cold. Still, the teams all tried their best and produced some terrific bits of football”.

Academy student Benjamin Cumming recently took part in work experience with the finance department of the club. Working alongside members of staff like George Caton. Benjamin has a keen eye for finance, and this is something he hopes to pursue at university. Here is what he had to say on his recent experience:

“I went to Edgeley Park and spent a few hours with both George and Nick from the finance team. George and Nick helped me gain some knowledge about what an accountancy job would be like such as qualifications, their journey towards their job and offering me tasks throughout my work experience which they would have the responsibility of first-hand. I had the responsibility of calculating income that Stockport County had recently brought in from games, through match programs, merchandise, and food & beverage. The experience made me have a better insight to what it would be like working as an accountant and what responsibilities they must uphold”.

Lastly, several of our Academy students also took part in work experience with Life Leisure through out half term. Working with children from disadvantaged areas, taking part in activities and providing a creative outlet for all involved. Jack Atkinson was one of the players who took part, here is what he had to say:

“Yeah it was a good experience to step into a new environment and help out with the holiday camp, it was nice to see all children enjoying themselves and having a good time. The activities were quite easy to set up and put into action, but they made the children get engaged and to see them gain their confidence throughout the morning was amazing to see”.
