County legend Chris Beaumont was in charge of our Twitter account on Monday, as he took part in a live Q&A with County supporters.
Missed it? Catch up on all of his answers below:
Q: What was it like to score at Wembley, and then to be sent off at Wembley?!
A: As you can imagine the range of emotions went from one extreme to another. To score put me on top of the world but then to be sent off not just ruined the day but also left a bitter taste in my mouth even today!
Q: After the defeat to B****** at Wembley (worst of the four defeats).. what did Danny say to pick you all up? 12 points in front was a sickener..and did you have any contact with David elleray after the game #AskChris
A: Danny always had a way of talking positive about everything, he reassured us that there was a lot of quality talent in the squad and if we were prepared to go again he would back us 100%. Still looking for David Elleray!
Q: During a game in the early 90s (opponents unknown) I went to give you a high five as you were about to take a corner. Unfortunately you ‘left me hanging’ as the kids say so need to know if this was on purpose or just a simple case of you concentrating on the game? #AskChris
A: If you have ever seen me take a corner you will know that I need to concentrate, so sorry if I left you hanging!
Q: Do you share my view that after years of lovely gola kits then couple beauties from super league… that the 1995 white beaver kit and grey away (despite record breaking away wins) were horrendous #AskChris
A: Unfortunately fashion including football kits change over the years but my view is the same as yours, old ones were the best!
Q: #AskChris Was there ever the opportunity of returning to County at any time, after you’d left us to play elsewhere?
A: Unfortunately not, but looking back after I left I don’t think they missed me
Q: Is the foul on David Frain in that famous Halifax away game in 1990 the most obvious penalty not given you’ve ever seen… #AskChris
A: It was the most obvious penalty not given and I remember it well because David Frain rarely got in the opposition’s box
Q: Hey Chris what was your highest and lowest point playing @StockportCounty #AskChris
A: Highest – Walking out at Wembley for the first time with County. Lowest – Walking off the pitch after being sent off at Wembley.
Q: #AskChris not a question but I just wanted to thank you for giving me a tour behind the scenes at EP when I was a young child. It meant the world to me to meet the players. From then on if anyone asked who my hero was I’d say Chris Beaumont. I still would to be honest!
A: Really appreciate this pal, hopefully see you at EP soon!
Q: What did it feel like seeing County promoted at Chesterfield when you were on the opposition team that day? #AskChris
A: One of those surreal moments where your heart is not where it should have been, without doubt the County players that season deserved all the success.
Q: Favourite County goal? (Not including Wembley or York in the play offs) #AskChris
A: Not many to choose from but Wigan away first game of the season or Lincoln away (Kevin Francis debut)
Q: Who is the best player you have played alongside whilst at County?#AskChris
A: Very difficult question to answer when you look at the players, one that stands out is Bill Williams
Q: When you played for Chesterfield on our promotion night how did you feel watching so many ex team mates celebrating. Did you fancy moving Ken Charlery out of the way & joining in.
A: To be honest the players that night deserved to celebrate but regarding Ken i’d like to have done more than move him out of the way
Q: Including last seasons & this seasons squad which County player have you been impressed with the most? #AskChris
A: Got to say Hinchcliffe of the games I’ve watched!
Q: Can you believe the Danny Begara era even happened? It was such a special time as a fan it must have been amazing as a player. #askChris
A: Looking back, I can believe what happened because after working with Danny Begara he’s an amazing human being with such an appetite and drive for Football. Me and County were lucky to have had him!
Q: How did it feel to score the winner in the play off semi final against York City and was that the most important goal that you ever scored? #AskChris!
A: The feeling was unforgettable especially with it being in the last minute of the game and taking County to Wembley! I would class it as the most important goal I scored but the goal celebration of trying to slide on dry mud and sand wasn’t the best decision I’ve made.
Q: What was it like scoring that early goal against stoke in the play offs? What a night that was. #ask Chris
A: The atmosphere before the game was very intimidating but the early goal certainly settled our nerves! Glad you had a good night because we certainly did
Q: #How different is it being a supporter rather than a player / legend ?
A: I don’t believe with County there is a big difference between being a supporter and player. I didn’t think supporters would be able to affect the game but the following and atmosphere that County fans create certainly allows them to
Q: Is it true Danny’s famous team talks comparing you all with soldiers at war, was a little more amped up than usual at Wembley in 94? Do you think that had an affect on what prevailed? #AskChris
A: Danny’s team talks were legendary (Eric Cantona’s cliches were nothing on him) but I wouldn’t say that wound us up. After the failures before we probably wanted it too much and let emotions take over
Q: Do you ever run around your garden shouting Rob Palmer’s Granada commentary: “Chris Beaumont, puts a heavy deposit downnnn, on a ticket to Wembley!” I do, if it means anything.
A: Rob Palmer was a great commentator
Q: Thoughts on Ted McMinn & David Elleray? #askchris
A: Have to be careful with the answer as it’s not after 9pm but anybody that is allegedly spat at and rolls around on the floor as though he’s been hit by a 40 ton lorry is questionable. No comment on David Elleray.
Q: Did you tape Saint & Greavsie if you had played the night before and did Big Kev buzz off the attention or was he offended by the mild p*ss taking? #AskChris
A: Always made sure I watched them two after our Friday night match. Big Kev was too placid to be wound up by mild piss take especially after the abuse he used to get from Burnley
Q: #AskChris – We all know that McMinn wound a lot of is up, inc Michael Wallace, that hateful afternoon at Wembley in 94 but what happened for you to lash out & receive Red? Number of us still baffled that it was you involved. Must have been a good reason for you to react Chris!
A: I’m still baffled, glad you’ve given me the opportunity to tell my side of the story. Neil Edwards collected the ball releasing it quickly in my direction, it bounced in front of me and the defender then jumped over my shoulder falling to the ground. I then turned to follow the ball, as I pushed off to chase the ball I caught the defender but this was not intentional. Probably didn’t help the defender rolling round on the floor for 10 minutes
Q: #AskChris Who was the best manager you worked under?
A: Dave Jones was a great man manager, John Duncan was very good tactically but without doubt it’s got to be Danny Bergara!
Q: What’s it like coming back as a supporter, and watching the current side win the league last year? #AskChris
A: It was great to come back as a supporter especially with my friends and family! Spending time amongst the county fans singing was a great pleasure
Q: When you were playing alongside Gannon could you tell he was going to go on to become a successful manager? #AskChris
A: Jim was very professional not just on the pitch but also off too! He was quiet on the pitch but the comments made after always made sense. Once he became a manager he was always going to be successful
Q: #askchris I thought you were a great servant to the club and many strikers benefited from your creative play. But I also remember plenty of verbal stick being dished by the crowd in your direction. Did that have an impact on your confidence?
A: Nobody likes to hear negative comments but it does drive you on to prove them wrong and hopefully this happened! All you can do is give a 100% and the fans will appreciate that
Q: Is it true you were told you’d broken your leg the week before the Everton game?! For someone with a broken leg, that cross to Helliwell wasn’t bad! #AskChris
A: I was told I had a stress fracture but if I could stand the pain after an injection would I play? It was a no brainer
Q: #askchris when the minority used to always have a go at you and Jim – did it just spur you on to prove them wrong? E.g York in the playoffs! #legend
A: I always left my all on the pitch every game sometimes, it probably hadn’t gone how I wanted it too I guess that’s football so you have to accept peoples comments.
Q: Apart from being one of my childhood heroes I cannot wait to see you at an away game again soon as you are a true pintman who can knock them back for fun. Love you mate x #askchris
A: Gutted Chesterfield away was cancelled got 8 tickets for friends to attend with me and have a couple (10) pints before the game having a sing song!
Q: Hi Chris , what are you up too these days are you still involved in football? #askchris
A: Sadly not, working in a local secondary school and enjoying socialising at the weekends
Q: @StockportCounty #askchris Not a question Chris but I always remember that belter you curled in against Preston at home at the Railway End. 93ish? Class player.
A: Cheers pal appreciate it
Q: Hello legend , thank you for some great memories. Can you give us a funny Danny Bergara story that we might not have heard? What was his man management style like ? #askchris
A: Regarding funny stories may not be the place to comment but thinking back on the way sometimes he tried to get things across to the lads with his broken English was legendary
Q: Apart from Lee Todd, who was the biggest liability on a 90s County squad night out? #AskChris
A: You don’t get any worse then Lee Todd but Peter Ward after a few could be a nuisance
Coming up next Monday, Club captain Paul Turnbull will be the next to take part in a live Q&A session. Have a question for our number four? Tune in next week, using the hashtag #AskBully!
