Club to celebrate 140th anniversary

2023 marks the 140th anniversary of Stockport County Football Club and we’ll be celebrating our long and illustrious history it in style over the next few months.

As part of the celebrations, we will be producing a series of videos which look back at some of the most iconic moments in our history, from where it all started as Heaton Norris Rovers in 1883 all the way through to Dave Challinor’s promotion-chasing side of 2023 – featuring exclusive interviews with County legends, as we pay tribute to their contributions to the club.

The Club will also be dedicating one of the pre-season fixtures to celebrating the landmark year. The celebration will take place on Saturday 29th July and will see County take on a Championship side at Edgeley Park, with a whole host of County players from across the generations invited to join us on the day – in association with the Stockport County Players Association.

For one time only, The Hatters will also be wearing a limited-edition commemorative kit for this game, which pays tribute to the club’s unique history and beginnings as Heaton Norris Rovers. The kit will be revealed over the coming months, with a limited number  also being made available for supporters to purchase.

In the run up to this match, a shirt exhibition will also be available for fans to visit at the stadium, which will see a number of iconic football shirts displayed, including ones worn by legends such as Jim Gannon, Alun Armstrong and Mike Flynn.

Club CEO Jonathan Vaughan said:

“Stockport County is a club with such a special history, dating all the way back to its formation as Heaton Norris Rovers in 1883. To this day, we hold the record for the biggest ever Football League win (13-0 v Halifax) and the longest ever game of football, not to mention the famous nine wins in a row without conceding a goal in 2006/07. These are the kind of moments we want to pay tribute to.

“As custodians of the club, it has always been at the forefront of our minds to ensure we properly recognise and celebrate the rich and proud heritage of Stockport County. The 140th anniversary is a special landmark for the club, and whilst Dave and the team are busy trying to create more history on the pitch, we have a number of exciting events coming up to ensure we don’t lose sight of where we’ve come from.”

We look forward to revealing more details of what we have planned over the next few weeks and hope you can all join us in July to celebrate the history of our special football club.
