County Christmas Day Eight: Sam Walker Completes Southport Comeback!

Day Eight of our #CountyChristmas Countdown, as we remember one of the defining results in our National League North title success last season!

On the back of a run of 13 League games unbeaten, we went in to our home game against Southport with the opportunity to move level on points with Leaders Chorley at the top of the table.

For a while, however, it looked like that run may well stop at unlucky number 13, as the visitors, much against the run of play, were two goals to the good with just over 30 minutes played.

This was a night from which Champions are made against a cynical Southport side, and right on the stroke of half-time hope was rekindled around Edgeley Park, Jordan Keane showing great techinique to drill home his first County goal from the edge of the area to completely change the mood going into the break.

It took just four minutes of the second-half for County to draw level, Darren Stephenson converting Sam Minihan’s cross to restore parity against his old club.

The defining moment of the game however, and perhaps the season, was left to Players’ Player of the Year Sam Walker, who stepped up to bend a delightful free-kick into the far corner to give County another crucial three points in a pulsating title race.
