For day three of our #CountyChristmas, we head back all the way to January of this year, where a certain Matty Warburton continued his remarkable scoring run with an Edgeley Park hat-trick against York!
Having scored four goals in his previous outing against Truro in the FA Trophy, Matty came into the game on his best run of form in a County shirt, and ended it with another match ball to add to his collection – his third of the season.
Keen to get off to a fast start against a York side who were playing their first game under new manager Steve Watson, it took just three minutes for Warby to get himself on the scoresheet, volleying home a tremendous left-footed shot on the turn to give County the lead.
Less than twenty minutes later, and County’s Player of the Year had another, rifling home from the edge of the area, via a deflection, to double County’s lead.
When York pulled one back with 17 minutes remaining, it could have set up a nervy final few moments for the Hatters – if not for that man Warburton, who latched on to a loose ball inside the area to fire home within a minute of the restart – his 21st goal of the season, to seal what proved to be a crucial three points in the title race!
