County Christmas Day Twenty Four: Scenes Around Edgeley Par As Title Race Swings County’s Way!

It’s Christmas Eve, and as we begin to wind down our #CountyChristmas Countdown, we look back on those scenes of ecstatic joy all around Edgeley Park, as a stoppage-time goal scored 136 miles away swung the title race in County’s favour.

Following defeat away at title-rivals Chorley just two days previous, County went into their final home game of the season looking like they may have to settle for a play-off place, the Magpies moving to points clear at the top with two games to go.

County hosted mid-table Curzon Ashton at Edgeley Park, whilst Chorley made the long trip up to Spennymoor knowing anything but a defeat would leave the destiny of the title in their own hands.

The Hatters quickly went about holding up our side of business, as goals from Ash Palmer and Matty Warburton put County 2-0 up in the first half.

And so we waited.

Into the second-half, and a deathly hush fell around the stadium, as news filtered through that Chorley had been awarded a penalty up in the North East. But to the delight of all present, the penalty was brilliantly saved – was it to be County’s day?

As we ticked into stoppage-time, it looked as though County may have to hope for a last day favour from Bradford PA if they were to secure automatic promotion.

But then came the moment that all County fans present will treasure for the rest of their lives. A dull roar went up suddenly around the ground, growing rapidly into an eruption of pure emotion as the news filtered through.

Glenn Taylor had headed home for Spennymoor in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

“And I can tell you, that County, are back, on top of the league!” erupts Jon Keighren live on Imagine FM. With a game against bottom club Nuneaton to come, it was a position County would not be letting go of.

Goosebumps. Every single time!

Meanwhile, over in Spennymoor…
