County Ladies Update: Congratulations to the Lionesses!

After a historic few weeks for women’s football in this country, following the incredible success of the Lionesses on Sunday, find out more about how our County Ladies side are preparing for the new season in this week’s update!

Congratulations to the Lionesses!

We hope all County fans were watching on and celebrating as The Lionesses lifted the Euro 2022 Trophy against Germany on Sunday night, at the end of what has been a landmark week in the development of Women’s football in this country.

Stockport County were one of the first non-Premier League Clubs to back a women’s team back in the 1989/90 season and we are proud to continue the tradition and be part of the massive growth of the women’s game.

Pre-season continues:

Pre-season continued on Thursday evening with an away game to last seasons League Champions, Liverpool Feds, ending in a 5-3 loss. Feds led 3-0 at half time, so to come back and score three away goals against the top team from last season was a major positive. County were also without several of their leading goalscorers, so it was particularly pleasing to see two new players, Tamia Forrester and Maisie Malone, on the scoresheet along with last season’s Reserve Team graduate Eva Craney-Barnie.

New signing Tamia Forrester was on the scoresheet against Liverpool Feds

Sunday saw Burnley visit Stockport Sports Village for an early kick-off so everyone could get home in time to watch the Euro’s Final. County held their own well against a Burnley side who have been in the division above us for two seasons now, a solitary Burnley goal divided the sides at half time.

Half way through the second half County equalised through Liv Wild, but this was short lived and Burnley went on to score a second and third before the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Charlie Bolland made her debut in goal during our pre-season game against Burnley

Again County were without regular scorers, Em Bradshaw, Maria Figueiredo and Hanifa Douglas but five players new to the side since last season played, and overall Steve O’Hara was pleased with the performance.

Goalkeeper injury:

Some bad news this week was that first choice ‘keeper Jess Linford has suffered a broken collarbone and will be out for up to eight weeks. Everyone at the Club wishes her a speedy recovery. Goalkeeping duties for yesterday’s game were taken by new signing Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Bolland, who will have competition for the number one slot from last year’s Reserve ‘keeper Denika Connolly.

The pre-season matches continue this Wednesday evening with a trip away to play Runcorn Linnets.
