County Ladies Update: First team and Development approach season run-in

There’s just two games to go for County Ladies in what’s been a successful first full season in charge for manager Steve O’Hara, with a piece of silverware still on offer in the coming weeks. Find out all about life over at Stockport Sports Village in our latest weekly update.

First-team prepare for final two games:

Last weekend, the First Team made the final, long trip to the North-East to play Norton and Stockton, but unfortunately they came home empty handed. It was one of those days when the run of the ball just wasn’t going our way. We hit the woodwork, missed a penalty and had chances cleared off the line, the ball just wouldn’t go into the net, and the final score was 1-0 to Norton.

Kenzie Bentley was voted Players’ Player of the Match for our game away at Norton & Stockton.

This Sunday we play our final FA Women’s National League game, away to struggling Merseyrail. Manager Steve O’Hara looks at our final two games of the season:-

“We head into the final two weeks of what’s been a great season for us. Despite last week’s defeat away at Norton, if we beat bottom of the table, Merseyrail, we are still able to pass the target points total we set for the girls back in August.

“It won’t be an easy game, as the pitch doesn’t suit our style of play, but we have the confidence to get the job done. With teams around us dropping points against each other, we are hoping for a top five finish come the end of the season.

“We then move on to the County Cup Final, where we play Tranmere Women FC, a repeat of last season’s final which we lost on penalties. As you can imagine, everyone in the camp is excited for that game and feel that there’s a score to settle!

How the league table looks heading into our final game of the season.

“If we finish the year with silverware it will be an incredible achievement, and something we can build on going into next season. It would be great to get as many County fans as possible at the final – it’s not too far away at Vauxhall Motors, CH66 1NJ. So, if you’re at a loose end, get yourself down there and make some noise for the girls!”

Development team wrap up league campaign:

Our Development Team played their final game in the Cheshire Women’s and Youth Football League, Premier Division on Sunday. Most of this team are still eligible to play in Under 18s football, so to be competing in the top division of the County League is a fantastic achievement for the players and Manager, Rhys Dandeker-Bourne, who sums up their season.

“A season of so many highs and lows! The team had a difficult start, results and performance wise, as it was a big step up from U18s/Junior football into the Senior age group.

“Despite the struggles, and a change for me from Assistant Coach to Manager, the group have developed and grown incredibly. To still be competing to finish third in the League in the final game of the season has come down to the belief and the hard work the girls have put in. Although we didn’t get the result we wanted to end the season, I am incredibly proud of the girls and how far they have come.”

“The team are still involved in the quarter finals of the League Challenge Cup, so there’s a trophy to play for too!”
