At our game against Solihull Moors on Monday, we were pleased to welcome Retta Howarth, the daughter of former County player Alec Herd and the sister of David Herd. She and the rest of the Herd family were guests of the Club.
Alec was a Scottish international, winning the League and FA Cup with Manchester City before finishing his career at Edgeley Park where he made 104 appearances scoring 41 goals.
David Herd was an outstanding young player at Edgeley Park, playing only 15 times for the Hatters but scoring 6 goals. He was transferred to Arsenal for a club record £10,000 in 1954, going on to win the FA Cup and two League Championships at Manchester United.
They created history at Edgeley Park on 5th May 1951, when David made his County debut against Hartlepool United. He played alongside Alec, and this was the first time a father and son had played a Football League game together on the same side.
The family were presented with Alec and David’s Stockport County Appearance Number (SCAN) certificates on the pitch at half time. Alec has # 527 and David Herd # 554. These were presented by County supporters Darren and Stuart Nightingale.
