International Women’s Day

As part of International Women’s Day 2023, we’re celebrating the launch of the County Community Trust’s Women’s Walking Football sessions at Pro Football Arena, in Cheadle.

Walking football has been growing in popularity in recent years, offering a fun and accessible way for people of all ages and abilities to get active and enjoy the health benefits of sport. However, despite its many benefits, walking football has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated sport, with relatively few opportunities for women to participate.

County Community Trust CEO Alison Warwood commended the sessions and welcomed the opportunity celebrate the success of these sessions; “It’s brilliant for international women’s day to be able to showcase women in football in all different areas of the sport”. As well as being a great way to get active and have fun, the launch of these women’s walking football sessions also highlights the growing recognition of the importance of women’s participation in sport. As well as the physical health benefits of exercise, sport can also help to build confidence, improve mental wellbeing and create new social connections.

Founding member Karen Ainsley states “It’s really important for the social side as well… When you get to your 60s you might not yet be a grandparent, you may have been retiring from work and often you lose touch with friends so just coming so something like this you can make new friends, you’re keeping fit and just enjoying yourself”.

The sessions take place at Pro Football Arena on Thursdays at 1 – 2pm
