Irwin joins the medical team

We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Stuart Irwin, who joins us as the club’s new Head of Medical Services.

Stuart brings with him a wealth of experience in the Football League, following spells at Middlesborough, Oldham Athletic and most recently at Blackpool in League One.

He spent four years as First Team Head Physiotherapist at Oldham after being appointed by John Sheridan in 2016, before departing to take on a similar role at Bloomfield Road.

We now welcome Stuart into this new role at Edgeley Park, where he will be working alongside the club’s existing medical team.

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:

“I am delighted to welcome Stuart Irwin to the club, who joins from Blackpool in the newly created position of Head of Medical Services. In this role, Stuart will oversee all medical provision at the club, across all our teams, working closely with Dr. Amjad Choudry, then specifically Dan Green in the Academy, and Luke Smith at first-team level.

“This is a strategic move from the club and not a reaction specifically to recent injuries. On benchmarking clubs of our size and ambition, we found that we were under resourced – with our committed staff working tirelessly but lacking the opportunity for proper reflection, CPD and the integration of smarter ways of working.”

“We talk about not waiting to arrive in the Championship to start behaving like a Championship club; believing that by doing this we not only get a head start, but also that the increased level of professionalism will help us get there. This is the challenge we set to all our departments. Stuart has the experience and character to lead our existing talented team and help our medical department grow into this type of operation.”
