January Player of the month

An interview with the Academy’s player of the month

As part of our ‘Celebrating Success’ series at Stockport County Academy, we caught up with our January Player of the Month winner: Alex Wilson. In the interview, Academy Welfare Officer Ryan Jones spoke with Alex about his recent performances, Academy life and his targets for the season with Stockport County.

So, Alex, congratulations on winning January’s Player of the Month. How do you feel?

AW: It feels good to win player of the month as I’ve been putting in a lot of hard work to improve my performances to help the team, and it feels great that this has been recognised.0

Alex you have been getting quite a lot of praise recently from your coach Michael Raynes, how does that make you feel to hear compliments like that from a former County player?

AW: It is really motivating to hear compliments from my coach as it fills me with confidence and reassures me that I am heading in the right direction with my football, as I want to keep Improving day by day to become a better player.

So, Alex, Derby Day 2 is fast approaching, with the game scheduled for Friday 4th February. How are you feeling ahead of the game, and will you make it two wins from two against Paul Turnbull’s side?

AW: I’m really excited for Derby Day number 2 as the atmosphere is always great to be a part of. I feel as a team we are confident because we are willing to do anything needed to win and make it two wins out of two against Paul Turnbull’s team. From a personal point of view, I know I will do my best to captain the side to victory and make it an enjoyable game for the spectators.

With your time here at the academy so far, what would you say has been your favourite moment?

AW: It is very hard for me to pick out one favourite moment whilst being here at the academy as everyday I’ve enjoyed playing football, but my favourite moment I would say was Derby Day 1 because of the atmosphere during the game and the win in the end felt fantastic!

Lastly Alex, what are your expectations and targets for the rest of the season?

AW: My target for the rest of the season is to keep improving my footballing ability and reach for higher levels, I will also carry on pushing myself to be recognised within the academy.

Thanks Alex! It’s been great catching up with you today, and we’re all looking forward to seeing you in action on Derby Day 2!
