Literacy prize-winners enjoy VIP Day Out at County

The winners of the Community Trust’s ‘This Calls for a Hero’ literacy competition recently enjoyed a VIP Day Out at Edgeley Park.

As part of the first prize package, Priestnall School pupil Stanley Shaw received a unique behind-the-scenes experience at the Stockport County v Rotherham United match, sitting alongside the Club’s Media & Communications Manager, Liam Richardson in the press box as he reported on the ball-by-ball match action.

Stanley also got the chance to meet County stars Ben Hinchliffe, Callum Camps and Benoný Breki Andrésson. His family also received match day hospitality in the club’s 1883 Suite.

The competition runners-up, Harry Huxley from Bramhall High School, Charlie Goode from Cheadle Hulme High School, Mia Wright-Garnett from Harrytown High School,  Deyna Lynch from Hazel Grove High School and Eden Crowders from Laurus Cheadle Hulme High School, also got the chance to attend the game and were presented with their medals and goody bags by the players on stage at the County Courtyard.

This unique storytelling competition was organised in partnership with club sponsors Together Money. It invited Year 8 students in Stockport to submit a 1000-word piece of creative writing, in a format of their choice, befitting the title ‘This Calls for a Hero’.

The panel of judges greatly admired all the stories but particularly enjoyed Stanley’s vividly entertaining story, which described the elation of a matchday steward scoring a County winner against Wrexham at Edgeley Park!

All of the winners and runners-up were also given the opportunity to form part of the County Collective guard of honour that welcomed the players onto the pitch.

County Community Trust CEO Alison Warwood sat on the panel alongside Club colleagues and representatives from Together Money.

Said Alison:

“It was a pleasure to read so many inspired and imaginative ‘Hero’ stories, all of which demonstrated that there’s no shortage of creative talent in Stockport’s secondary schools.

“I’d like to thank all those pupils who set to task, let their imaginations run wild, and sent in their entries. They did themselves and their schools proud.”

Each winning story, as well as several runners-up, will be published in a commemorative ‘This Calls for a Hero’ book. This will be sold in the County Store, with all proceeds going to charity.
