Madden confirmed as Club Captain

We are delighted to announce that Paddy Madden has been confirmed as the new Stockport County captain for the upcoming 2022/23 season – our first back in the EFL since 2011.

Former Bolton Wanderers skipper Antoni Sarcevic has been named as our new vice-captain, as he looks for an incredible fourth promotion in a row this season.

Paddy replaces title-winning skipper Liam Hogan, who left the Club in the summer to join Oldham, shortly after becoming just the second man in the last 55 years to captain County to a league title.

The Irish striker was a real talisman for County last season, serving as vice-captain to Hogan and leading the side out on many occasions in his absence. It was his 25 goals in all competitions that fired County to promotion back to League 2, and his performances saw him named as both the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year.

He is no stranger to having the armband either, having previously captained Fleetwood Town in League One and he will be the man to lead the team out for a historic first season back in the Football League.

Club Captain Paddy Madden said:

“To be named as captain of this amazing Club is a real honour for me personally. The bond and love I have built up for this County in such a short space of time really shows the kind of people we have associated with this Club and around it. There’s a real together about the place right now, so to lead us all out into such an important year for the Club, our first season back in the EFL, is something I’m very proud of. Here’s to hopefully another successful season and to getting back to the Prince Albert together!’

Manager Dave Challinor said:

“Paddy captained the team on many occasions last season, including that memorable day at Edgeley Park back in May, so he is a natural fit for the role. Regardless of wearing the armband or not, he’s a leader in the dressing room and thrives with responsibility.

“We’ve plenty of players in the squad who have captained either this club or their previous clubs before, with the likes of Sarce, Fraser, Kyle, Ash, Ben, so we are in a good place with plenty of candidates if Paddy isn’t involved.”
