Match Preview: County v Dag & Red

County welcome Dagenham & Redbridge to Edgeley Park this weekend, looking to maintain a perfect home record against the Daggers to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

Tuesday night’s 5-0 demolition of Solihull Moors at Damson Park, our biggest win of the season, saw us remain in 4th place, but close the gap on the top three to four points, although we remain seven points behind new league leaders Sutton United.

Meanwhile two Paul McCallum goals for Dagenham on Tuesday saw them beat out of form Maidenhead 2-1 at Victoria Road to continue a mini upturn in form for them, that has lifted them to 16th in the league table and within five points of a play-off place.

Since we last met:

It’s been less than two months since we last took on Daryl McMahon’s side, as second-half goals from Richie Bennett and Alex Reid helped us to a 2-0 away win, in what was to be Jim Gannon’s final game in charge of the Club.

After seven games without a goal, John Rooney returned to the scoresheet in some style on Tuesday night.

That result left us in 4th place, whilst for Dagenham they remained in 18th place, still with a healthy nine point gap between themselves and the relegation zone, and within five points of the play-offs in an incredibly congested league table.

The Daggers results since that day have been something of a mixed bag – their next game saw them come from 2-0 down to snatch a dramatic stoppage time winner against King’s Lynn Town, whilst they have also claimed impressive points against Chesterfield and Wrexham.

There have been low points too – in particular 3-1 defeat against a ten-man Notts County side who had an outfield player in goal for over 70 minutes.

19-year-old Jack Stretton marked his County debut by grabbing his first senior goal on Tuesday night, after signing on loan from Derby County.

Overall, however, their form has improved, with just three defeats in 11 games since that meeting in January, picking up 15 points. They are currently unbeaten in their last three games, winning at Solihull and coming from 2-0 down to claim a point against Boreham Wood before Tuesday’s victory against Maidenhead.

Despite struggling for goals this campaign – only bottom two Dover and Barnet have scored fewer than their 26 – their front two of McCallum and Angelo Balanta have found their shooting boots in recent weeks, with five goals between them in the last three games.

Match Stats:

  • We are unbeaten in our five previous meetings with Dagenham, winning four of them. Both previous meetings at Edgeley Park have ended in 1-0 County wins.
  • In our ten games under manager Simon Rusk, we have conceded just five goals, the best defensive record in the league during that time, whilst Ben Hinchliffe has kept more clean sheets (11) than any other National League ‘keeper this season.
  • John Rooney’s brace on Tuesday took his tally to 16 for the season, with an additional six assists, in just 29 games this season.
