Stockport County are delighted to announce that striker Matty Warburton has signed an extended contract until the end of next season.
The prolific 25-year-old has scored 16 goals in just 28 appearances this season, including the opener at Maidenhead United last Saturday.
Warburton is making the most of his second spell at Edgeley Park having been on the club’s books as a youngster from the age of 12-16.
He has since scored goals for Maine Road, Curzon Ashton and Salford City before returning to the Hatters.
Manager Jim Gannon said: “I’m delighted to be working with Matty for a further season. I think over the last six months he has shown the County faithful why I made him the first signing of the season.
“I haven’t really needed to coach Matty, he’s clearly shown a great understanding of his role and position and has continued to show the maturity of a well skilled number ‘10’. With players like Matty, mentoring is a more appropriate term when discussing the role or demands of the central attacking midfield position, as he tries to impose his skills within the context of the game and its development.
“I think Matty’s goal scoring record in recent years speaks for itself and he has continued that within the current season, and he is well on track to have his most productive season in terms of goals. But Matty also brings much more, with an attacking drive and quality that will ensure a very good contribution to our movement up the pitch into attacking areas, and assisting in goals from penetrative passes, crosses and set plays.
“Matty is a significant signing in terms of our new training system as our developing training programme allows for the best quality part-time players to be retained for this season and into next season. We have few fears about the levels of Matty’s athletic and technical qualities and, along with a good strength programme, we feel that his level of work will be sufficient for him to continue to perform at a high level as we move forward.”
