Minihan ‘made up’ to be staying at County – interview & video

Defender Sam Minihan says he wants to play at the highest level possible and believes he can fulfil those dreams with Stockport County.

County’s Young Player of the Year signed a new two-year deal at Edgeley Park this week and he believes this will be the season when County finally earn promotion back to the Conference National.

The 24-year-old said: “I want to go as high as possible in the game, and I really believe County will do it this season.

“My progression as a player is really important, and under Jim I can progress and improve rapidly. I’m no different to anyone else, I want to play as high as possible for as long as possible, playing full-time football, and I believe that’s the direction County are heading in.”

Sam admits there was a ‘hangover’ after missing out on the Play Offs last season, but says the lads are raring to go as pre-season training started again last night. He said: “There was a bit of a hangover during the summer, a case of ‘what could have been’. To miss out by one goal was tough to take, but we do take positives. We had the best defensive record in the league, conceded the least goals, and we do feel there are a lot of positives to take into this year.”

He added: “I can’t wait to get started, I’m made up to sign the contract and stay with County; it’s a great club with a great set of fans and the lads are looking really good, so it’s a great place to be.”
