Lewis Smith has been selected as the match referee for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie between Sheffield Wednesday and County at Hillsborough.
The official is in his first full season as an EFL referee having been promoted in the summer, although he had experience last season of refereeing in the Championship, League One and League Two.
Smith took charge of County on one occasion last season, a 1-0 win against Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy, and four times during our National League title-winning campaign, overseeing wins against Southend and Altrincham, a draw with Bromley and a defeat at Grimsby Town. It will be his first time refereeing a game involving Sheffield Wednesday.
In total last season he took charge of 36 first-team fixture, the majority in the National League, showing 120 yellow cards, two red cards and awarding seven penalties. He was in League One action on opening day, officiating Northampton Town’s 1-0 defeat to fellow newly promoted side, Stevenage.
Smith will be assisted on the day by Paul Newhouse and Daniel Woodward, whilst Gareth Rhodes will be the Fourth Official.
