Everyone at Stockport County Football Club are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our former player David Wilkes (SCAN 903), at the age of 59.
David came to Edgeley Park in the summer of 1986, one of a number of signings by new manager Jimmy Melia. He had been playing in Honk Kong for Harps, returning to England to join a Hatters side optimistic of a successful season. A youthful, right sided midfielder, he made his debut at the Vetch Field against Swansea City in a 3-0 defeat in the first game of the season. He was to score his first goal for County three days later, in a League Cup victory over Tranmere Rovers at Edgeley Park. This was to be the only winning game in the twelve appearances he made for County. It is fair to say that the hopes of a Jimmy Melia inspired revolution, were quickly dashed as the team embarked on a terrible start to the season that saw County bottom of the League in November, and out of the FA Cup after a defeat to non League Caernarfon Town. It was a difficult time for a young player like Wilkes and he is remembered for continuing to give his very best in a side lacking confidence and direction. A highlight was his goal in the second leg of the League Cup tie with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park, when he drove in a goal after only 22 seconds, that was to set County up for a 2nd Round game against Sheffield Wednesday.
An unfortunate knee injury in October 1986 resulted in him dropping out of the team as new manager Colin Murphy arrived. Inevitably new players were signed by Murphy and this signaled the end of his appearances at Edgeley Park. He remained with the club until the end of the season before departing to non League Frickley Athletic in his native Yorkshire.
After appearances for a number of non League teams he finished his career at Carlisle United, after which he was to embark on a hugely successful coaching career. He coached at both Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town, but it was at Brunton Park where he was to make his most significant contribution. As a member of the Carlisle United staff he was to act in a number of roles including caretaker first team manager, but it was in youth coaching he has his most lasting legacy. He spent over 25 years with the Cumbrian side, helping the careers of notable players including County’s Player Liaison Officer Matt Jansen and Rory Delap. He was Carlisle United’s Head of Academy coaching at the time of his passing.
In total David made 12 appearances for The Hatters, scoring 2 goals. He is fondly remembered as a young player who gave his best during a difficult period in our club history, and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.
