The Club can confirm that midfielder John Rooney has today signed for League Two Barrow AFC for an undisclosed fee, bringing to an end an 18-month spell at Edgeley Park.
It was Barrow where John originally made the move to Edgeley Park from, signing a three-year-deal with County in 2020 – just a few months after captaining the Bluebirds to the National League Title.
He finished last season as the club’s joint-top scorer in all competitions alongside Alex Reid, hitting the back of the net from midfield 21 times, in a campaign filled with spectacular individual moments from the 31-year-old.
That form saw him named National League Player of the Year for the second successive season as we finished third, before missing out in the play-offs. He would go on to score a further four times this season – his last for the Club coming at the Cheadle End against Maidenhead last Tuesday, to help send us top of the National League.
We would like to thank John for all his efforts whilst at the club, and we wish him all the best in the EFL upon his return to Barrow.
Director of Football Simon Wilson said:
“We recognise this is a good opportunity for John, and a fair deal that suits all parties. John has been a really important part of the club’s development over the last 18 months. He is a winner and has helped us move forward, providing many ‘wow’ moments along the way.”
