In the Gym

To enhance their performance on the field, the students must work hard in the gym, and the facilities at Stockport Sports Village allows the students to unlock their full potential. The students receive regular gym training, gaining valuable one-to-one time with our rehabilitation team.

This term, the students have been focusing primarily on technique, strength and power. This consists of the students lifting high weights with low reps, and cardio as part of a circuit. Helping to develop technique at an early stage was important, as this helps avoid injury and maximises the benefits of the sessions.

All students have been subject to a screening before undertaking gym work by our rehabilitation team, with each given an Individual Plan (IP). This highlighted any weaknesses that a student may have and gave an insight into what areas the student needs to develop. The IP helps avoid injury by implementing injury-prevention exercises, balance, proprioception and hip trunk control and single leg strengthening, among other exercises.

Not only do the IPs help the students develop on the pitch, it also sets them up in good stead for the future. Acknowledging weaknesses and perfecting technique gives students an upper hand when starting a career in the field of sport.

After the Christmas holidays, the students will focus on muscle endurance. The same equipment will be used, and the IPs will be followed closely, but the students will be using lower weights with higher reps. The exercises will be performed in a circuit to help maintain endurance.
